About Acorn Furniture

Acorn Furniture exists to design and make one-off pieces of furniture and carvings from British timbers.

Each piece is designed in conjunction with the customer to create something that is both unique and personal to the individual and their environment/space. Acorn Furniture will bring both inspiration and practical experience to help make your ideas into a successful reality.

The goal of the design is an item that is both simply beautiful and functionally attractive; it will make the most of the natural beauty of the timber; the proportions will be right for the material, neither too chunky nor too delicate; the shapes will not be overly ornate but may include some subtle curves and the finished piece will be sympathetic to the owner and its location.

The piece will also do its job well; it will be strong, long lasting and, if appropriate, comfortable.

Furniture will be largely free-standing rather than fitted, made from solid timber rather than veneer, and will include dining tables, coffee tables, chairs, cabinets, bookshelves and entrance gates. These may include a touch of the unusual such as a Welsh dragon inlaid in a table top or a walking-stick-holder based on a Möbius strip.

Other carvings and commissions, all with wood in common, include a Barbara Hepworth-style sculpture, house signs, bowls, Möbius strips, a "talking-stick", some mathematical puzzles for Warwick university, a master to make a mould for a Dr. Who umbrella handle, a memorial and parts for a boat and a vintage car.

We work mostly with British timbers because we do have such a beautiful and largely unappreciated range of our own timber and because no amount of documentation and certification makes it more environmentally friendly to use timber imported from other continents than it is to use a local tree that was being felled anyway.
