Bark Mulch /Wood Chippings

Bark mulch in a flower bed

Bark mulch and woodchip are terms usually used interchangeably to mean "chipped up bits of tree used for weed control". Woodchip should ideally be left in a moist heap for six months or longer before use.

Woodchip should initially be applied in a layer between 2" and 3" thick (50 - 75mm). As the material gradually turns to mulch and mixes with the soil, another inch (25mm) or so should be added each year in most circumstances.

Advantages of woodchip:

  • suppresses weed growth
  • helps water retention
  • improves organic content of the soil
  • improves worm content of the soil (therefore improves soil quality)
  • improves root density of developing trees and therefore the long term health and stability of the tree

Tests performed by the International Society of Arboriculture have shown that newly planted trees surrounded by a 2-3" layer of woodchip develop FOUR TIMES the root density of identical trees surrounded by grass or weeds.

If a water-permeable barrier is placed on the soil before the woodchip is put down, the weed suppression is improved but the soil improvement aspects are not as great
