Dining Tables and Chairs

Acorn Furniture designs and hand-crafts solid wood furniture to suit your exact requirements. Dining tables and chairs have to be comfortable above all else; some of the pictures below show furniture created from the customer's own tree; we can do this for you or use existing stocks of British hardwoods or commercially available European oak.

Statement Table

This oak Statement Table was designed by the clients and made to accommodate their exact brief. This table later became the inspiration for another piece of furniture, the Statement Desk.

Extending Dining/Writing Table in Oak and Leather

This refectory style table was designed to make the most of available space by being multi-size and multi-functional. It is the only piece of furniture on this website that has been stained; this was to match existing library furniture.

Democratic Table

This Democratic Table was commissioned to seat up to twelve people with no 'head of the table'. Once made, the customers moved house to a property chosen specifically to match the table!

Refectory Table

This is one of a matching pair of refectory tables made from two oak trees belonging to the client. One tree had already died whilst the other could be spared from their beautiful woodland. The clients intend the tables to become family heirlooms.

Dining Table for Wheelchair User

The requirement for this table was for Terry to be able to easily drive his wheelchair at the end and any point along the side. It took four iterations of design to arrive at this novel but satisfactory solution. Pat and Terry were delighted but their letter of thanks was heart wrenching.

Dutch Dining Table

A Dutch couple planned to take this oak table back with them when they returned to the Netherlands. This project became extraordinary when the client decided to bring the legs closer together after every element had been created and was ready to glue together. The second row of pictures illustrate how a very shallow diagonal slice was taken out of the centre section of the rail and re-glued using biscuit joints. The cross shows where the join is before the wood is oiled. The final picture show the client looking for the join!

Spalted Beech Tabletop

This story started with a phone call from Kim Pinnington of Telegraph Contract Furniture who had been let down by another supplier and needed a 10 foot long, spalted beech table top making and delivering to a restaurant in Deansgate, Manchester within a week. It was to be smooth but not completely flat or straight so the rough planks had to be sanded but not planed. Fortunately, I had the timber in stock and had just finished our previous project so we were able to squeeze this in and finish in time!

Custom Table Legs

This commission was from a skilled amateur woodworker making a specific drop-leafed table. I designed and made the legs and the woodworker did everything else. The pictures show the leg as designed and the finished table.

Pub Furniture

The Peal O'Bells pub in Holt commissioned these stools and table. They are made from character oak and the landlord confirms they are always his customers' first choice when looking for a seat! This furniture set is featured in a Welsh-design coffee-table book.

Russian Dining Table

This Russian Dining Table was designed alongside the "Russian" Windsor chairs below and made from an ash tree that had blown down and been planked a decade previously. When planed the wood had beautiful colours and patterns totally unlike anything I have seen in another tree.

Windsor Chairs

Windsor chairs are a very strong, light and comfortable design of chair that has been made in Britain for a long time. You don't need foam rubber to make a comfortable chair! The craft of bodging was making Windsor chair components in the woodland from coppiced green timber. These were originally made into chairs by the bodger but later assembled separately in a factory.

"Russian" Windsor Chairs

This pair of matching Windsor chairs has an unconventional design with the crossing legs; they were made for customers who do business in Russia and are inspired by a chair that is in the Kremlin. Although they match, the chairs are quite different in nearly all their dimensions and angles: just like their owners! Eventually they will be joined around the table above by another eight matching armchairs. Comparing the last two pictures will give an idea of just how different these 'matching' chairs are.

Windsor Rocking Chairs

The chair on the left was made on Nick's longest ever woodworking course (5 days) from very traditional materials: elm and ash. The right most chair is being constructed for a lady from some yew wood that had been left in her late husband's workshop (and ash for the rockers and bows).
