Tree Work Procedures
There are just four recognised arboricultural procedures
for pruning established trees and these may be carried out individually
or in combination. Note that “topping” is not recommended
practice because new branches growing on a cut stub will never be as strongly
attached as a normal branch. A good arborist will never leave stubs –
they are both unsightly and will cause the tree to decay. The British
Standard on pruning trees (BS 3998) also prohibits the leaving of cut
stubs. (see horror pictures below)
