Tree Work Procedures

There are just four recognised arboricultural procedures for pruning established trees and these may be carried out individually or in combination. Note that “topping” is not recommended practice because new branches growing on a cut stub will never be as strongly attached as a normal branch. A good arborist will never leave stubs – they are both unsightly and will cause the tree to decay. The British Standard on pruning trees (BS 3998) also prohibits the leaving of cut stubs.
