Waney Edged or Natural Edged Furniture
Wood can retain more of its own originality and character by keeping its waney edge – the natural edge under the bark. Waney edged furniture is something that is very attractive to some people and the opposite to others!
Television Stand
This client wanted a television stand that would have lots of character but at the same time be functional. The eye-catching waney edged design fulfilled the aesthetic brief, whilst access to electrical sockets via the rear of the unit ensured its functionality.
Coffee Table
Nick was approached to repair the wood and remake this coffee table. It had originally been made from beautiful burr elm but just put together with screws through the top into the legs. Nick repaired the tabletop and used mortice and tenon joints to secure the legs, leaving an aesthetically pleasing table.
Waney or Natural Edged Coffee Tables in Oak
A variety of coffee tables showing how the natural edge can be used in different ways.
Stacking Coffee Tables
The brief was to make three waney-edged coffee tables that would stack. Designing table legs that complement waney-edged tabletops can often pose a challenge. What was more difficult here was designing legs that would look good and stack! Both Nick and the customer were delighted with the finished result!
Bookshelf
A simple brief was given to produce this charming bookshelf: the client had been given some planks of wood, liked the waney edged style and required some more storage for books!
Spalted Beech Restaurant Table
Although not very waney, this table top has no straight lines or flat surfaces and gives its own contribution to the atmosphere of this restaurant.
Waney Edged Oak Tables for Yo! Sushi
These ten table tops for a Yo! Sushi restaurant are in Selfridges in the Trafford Centre in Manchester. Yo! Sushi wanted a more natural and less clinical feel when they refurbished this restaurant and so chose waney edged oak tables.
Dining Table
This commission came from a friend who was inspired by some table legs designed previously. The legs were reproduced for this commission but it claimed its own originality and character with its waney edged tabletop.
