Tim Watkins Orienteering Trophies

A range of trophies was commissioned for men and women's orienteering events. The men's trophy was carved in oak, whilst the women's trophies used cherry. All bases were stained oak.

Memorial

Nick first met Ruth when she was seven years old and her husband, Bob, a short time later! When Bob asked Nick to a make a memorial to Ruth, he felt honoured and challenged. These pictures show the prototype in oak and the final one, made from pear wood,which hangs in St. Paul's in Boughton, Chester.

Dr. Who Umbrella Handle

Nick received an unusual request to carve a Dr. Who umbrella handle to be used to create a mould, which could then be used to cast numerous umbrella handles. Umbrellas were then produced and sold at a Dr. Who convention.

Lady with Hair

This sculpture was commissioned for the centrepiece of a window feature in a new London salon. Nick is quick to confirm that this was the only time he has ever taken an angle grinder to a lady's bottom!

Square Bowls

Nick was commissioned to make two matching bowls from a client's own tree. The specified design was challenging to make: the overall shape is a rounded square with very deep, overhanging curved sides. The bowls could not be made on a lathe nor carved by hand using conventional carving tools. A long router cutter mounted in a spindle moulder and a series of jigs were purpose built for this project!

House And Farm Signs

House and farm signs can be carved in all sorts of styles. Painting the carved letters can increase the clarity of the sign, if required.

Talking Stick

The brief for the talking stick came from a lady who was marrying into a talkative household. She wanted a carving that was visually attractive, tactile and would stand up; whoever is holding the Talking Stick can speak without being interrupted. I never found out whether she managed to get a word in edgeways!
